This tropical smoothie recipe is made with pineapple, mango, banana, and coconut milk. Coconut oil and chia seeds give this healthy smoothie recipe a dose of healthy fats and superfoods. It’s thick, creamy, delicious, refreshing, and the perfect way to start the day.

    tropical smoothie recipe

I drink smoothies daily! I’m blending up this detox smoothie, blueberry smoothie, or triple berry smoothie most of the time. But then there are times I want a tropical feel to my mornings, so I grab the frozen pineapple and mango to make this delicious tropical smoothie recipe.

    Reasons you’ll love this recipe

    • It tastes like you’re on the beach! If you close your eyes while taking a sip, you might hear the ocean and Caribbean music.
    • Easy to prepare. Throw all the ingredients into a high-speed blender, and in less than 5-minutes, breakfast is ready.
    • Budget-friendly. You can pay close to $10 for a smoothie at a smoothie cafe. Even when purchasing all organic ingredients making homemade smoothies is substantially cheaper.
    • Nutritious. You control the ingredients, which means everything can be organic and you can include whatever superfood you like.
    • Make-ahead. Create smoothie kits to have all the ingredients ready for a quick breakfast.

    Ingredients

tropical smoothie ingredients. Pineapple, mango, banana, coconut milk, coconut oil, and chia seeds.
    • Pineapple chunks. What’s a tropical smoothie recipe without pineapple? Pineapple gives it that tropical flavor along with a ton of Vitamin C.
    • Mango chunks. Mango provides a thick creamy texture and another layer of flavor to this smoothie. It also includes Vitamin C to help with immunity, fiber to help with digestion, and pectin, which helps to reduce cholesterol.
    • Banana. Banana gives this smoothie a burst of natural sweetness and works with the mango to create a super thick and creamy texture. You can freeze leftover bananas, if you have any.
    • Coconut oil. Not only does coconut oil give the smoothie a pina colada taste, but it adds healthy fatty acids. Coconut oil helps to burn fat, reduces hunger, is excellent for the skin, and more.
    • Coconut milk. This helps to give the fruit smoothie a creamier texture.
    • Chia seeds. I add chia seeds to all of my smoothie recipes. It gives a good punch of omega 3-fatty acids, fiber, and protein.
    • Shredded coconut. This ingredient is optional. If you have some available, then sprinkle it on the smoothie before drinking it.

Shopping tip. Large bulk bags of organic tropical frozen fruit can be purchase at your local wholesale store or grocery stores for affordable prices if you plan to make tropical fruit smoothies often, then purchase in bulk for the best deals.

How to Make a Tropical Smoothie Recipe

step by step collage showing how to make tropical smoothie recipe
    • Place all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Add water if needed for a thinner consistency.

For more smoothie tips check out my tutorial on how to make a green smoothie.

    Supplies

    • High-speed blender – I’ve owned a Vitamix for close to 10 years, and it’s still going strong. If you plan to make smoothies regularly, I recommend investing in a high-quality blender. If a Vitamix is too pricey, then check out my recommendation for the best blenders for smoothies.
    • Glass tumbler – I often use a 32-ounce mason jar for drinking smoothies. I also have this 18-ounce Ello glass tumbler.
    • Reusable straws – These Ello reusable straws work fantastic for smoothies.
    • Straw cleaner – Definitely grab a straw cleaner to keep those straws clean.
    • 20-ounce Yeti tumbler –  I love using my Yeti tumbler to keep smoothies cold on the go.
    • Reusable silicone bags  – These bags come in handy when putting together freezer smoothie kits.

    Substitutions

    • Use fruit juices in place of coconut milk. I tend to stay away from fruit juices when making smoothies because they add substantial calories and sugar. If you choose to use fruit juice, then pineapple juice or orange juice is delicious.
    • Use fresh or frozen fruits. Fresh mangoes or pineapple will work fine in this recipe. If using fresh fruits, then add a cup of ice cubes to create a slushy cold smoothie. In my opinion, it’s easier to purchase frozen fruit because then I don’t need to deal with cutting fresh mangos or pineapple. However, both fresh and frozen will work.
    • Blend in your favorite superfood. Flax seeds, matcha powder, hemp hearts, or collagen are all excellent choices.
    • Make a smoothie bowl. If you’d instead want to enjoy your tropical smoothie recipe with a spoon, then use less liquid to make a thick smoothie bowl. Then top it with more shredded coconut and nuts.
    • Use other tropical fruits. Dragon fruit, passion fruit, acai, or papaya are delicious in this tropical fruit smoothie.
    • Make it green. Blend in a cup of spinach, kale, or super greens to make this a green tropical smoothie.
    • Make it an alcoholic party drink. Whoa! What? You can quickly turn this into a frozen drink and serve it at a summer party; just blend in a shot of rum.
    • Make it for a dessert. Tropical shake, anyone? Blend in a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream for a delicious cold dessert that everyone will love.

    Storage

This smoothie recipe is so easy to make. However, if you don’t have time to break out the blender every morning, you can make a few smoothies at a time and then store them in mason jars in the fridge. The consistency will change, but the flavor will still be tasty. Give the smoothie a couple of shakes and enjoy.

Another way to prep smoothies ahead of time is to create freezer smoothie kits. In the morning, dump the ingredients from the kits into a blender and blend.

Made this with the 2023 Smoothie Challenge. We have a few allergies here, so we substituted in dark cherries to go with the pineapple. We also added avocado. Used apple juice and coconut milk for the liquid. Added in coconut milk and chia seeds. Delicious and filling!

I chopped up a little bit of mint from my garden and it added a light mint flavor to an already great tasting and healthy smoothie. I love that it gets my daughter and I to eat more spinach without really knowing it! Thank-you for this recipe (and so many others). Your philosophy – organize yourself skinny – is helping me to make much needed changes toward a healthier lifestyle. I am so grateful!

I am sugar, dairy and gluten intolerant and allergic to raspberries.

I can’t use any ferocious vegetables. I get so bloated and it causes discomfort. Any form of garlic and onion has the same effect.

I started using Chlorophille greens -mint flavored alfalfa but feels horrible. I only use half the prescribed dosage.

My physician advised me to avoid any food my stomach doesn’t tolerate.

Can you help me with a balanced meal plan?

      Regards

When you make a smoothie and eat just that for breakfast, does that fill you up? I love smoothies but I never feel full for very long? Any suggestions for making them more “stick to your rib”?

Have you tried to freeze the spinach like you do with the kale smoothies? and have you had any luck with it? I want to start making your freezer smoothie kits but was worried how the spinach or kale would hold up in the freezer.

kale holds up awesome in the freezer and I would bet spinach would do the same.

I freeze baby spinach all the time to use in my smoothies. No problem. I generally use both kale and spinach in my smoothies.

These recipes sound delicious and I like the idea of freezing the ingredients so I don’t have to start from scratch
