Keto pizza sauce on cauliflower pizza crust with cheese and spinach

I’ve been making this keto pizza sauce for years, possibly decades. Last week, it occurred to me that this pizza sauce is low carb and keto-friendly. It includes only four ingredients, zero added sugar, and is so simple to make.

Reasons You’ll Love This Keto Pizza Sauce

    1. The entire family will love this pizza sauce. It’s difficult to find low-carb recipes the whole family can get behind. Fortunately, this low carb pizza sauce isn’t one of them. You can use this pizza sauce on all of your favorite low-carb and traditional pizza crusts.
    2. This pizza sauce recipe is one of the easiest you’ll ever make. Honestly, you won’t need to purchase store-bought pizza sauce again. If you can chop the garlic and turn on the stove, this pizza sauce recipe will be a breeze.
    3. This pizza sauce can rival most local pizza joints. I know this a big statement to make, but every person that tries this pizza sauce RAVES about it.
    4. This recipe can be made and frozen ahead of time. Make a double or triple batch and freeze into portions to use on your favorite keto-friendly pizza recipes later on. I’ll give more meal prep tips below.

    FAQs

    Is store-bought pizza sauces low-carb and keto-friendly?

In general, most store-bought pizza sauces include added sugars. There are some low-carb and keto pizza sauces available, but these options are pricey.

Rao’s pizza sauce is my favorite store-bought pizza sauce made without sugar. It’s low carb, keto, and Whole30 compliant. The only issue is it cost between $4.50 – $5 for a 13-ounce jar.

Yes, it’s possible to purchase low-carb pizza sauce from the store. However, it’s more cost-efficient to prepare homemade keto pizza sauce. If you want to use all organic ingredients or a particular tomato sauce brand, then cooking homemade allows you to have that control.

What are some low carb pizza crust options?

Low-carb pizza recipes have come a long way. Here are some favorite ideas for enjoying pizza without the carbs. Most of these options are low carb, keto-friendly, and gluten-free.

Portobello mushroom caps – fill a portobello mushroom with your favorite pizza fixings, bake, and eat.

Zucchini boats – Cut a zucchini in half, scoop out the seeds, layer with pizza ingredients, and then bake.

Low Carb Ground chicken pizza crusts and fathead pizza crusts – both of these pizza crusts take a little more work to prepare. However, these keto pizza crusts are a great way to trick your brain into thinking you’re eating traditional pizza dough.

Cauliflower pizza crust – You can make homemade cauliflower pizza or purchase store-bought. The Trader Joes brand is a favorite.

Chicken breasts – top a chicken breast with pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.

Here are other high protein pizza ideas to offer more variety.

What low-carb ingredients can I use on pizza?

Where do I start with low-carb pizza toppings? There are so many options.

Here are a few of my favorites.
    Pepperoni.
    Chicken sausage.
    Shredded or diced chicken.
    Ground beef.
    Steak.
    Italian sausage.
Deli sliced ham, capicola, or other Italian meats.
    All different kinds of cheese.
    Mushrooms
    Spinach
    Broccoli
    Zucchini
    Roasted cauliflower, broccoli, and asparagus
    Bell peppers
    Tomatoes

    Can I freeze pizza sauce?

Yes, you can freeze pizza sauce. After the sauce has finished cooking, let it cool. After it’s cooled, freeze into 1 – 1 ½ cup portions to use on pizza or other recipes later on.

    How to store pizza sauce?

After the pizza sauce is cooked and cooled then pour the sauce into an airtight glass container. I use one or two 16-ounce mason jars to store leftover sauce in. The sauce will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. If you don’t use the pizza sauce within five days, then freeze.pizza sauce in a mason jar

    Ingredients

    low carb pizza sauce ingredients
    • Tomato sauce – Thrive Market and Muir Glen are both organic tomato sauce brands I love using.
    • Extra virgin olive oil – I use 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil.
    • Garlic – 2-3 medium to large garlic cloves will add delicious garlic flavor to the sauce. Although most of the time, when I make this sauce, I use about 4-5 cloves.
    • Oregano – traditional pizza sauce uses only oregano as a seasoning.

    Substitutions

Use other seasonings. Dried basil and Italian seasoning are other seasonings to use in pizza sauce.

Add butter. For a creamy, silky sauce, add 1-2 tablespoons of salted butter to the olive oil as you’re sauteing the garlic.

Add crushed red pepper flakes. This gives the pizza sauce a spicy kick.

Add chopped mushrooms, or other vegetables, into the sauce. If you want to bulk up the pizza sauce’s nutrition, then saute mushrooms, zucchini, or eggplant before adding the garlic.

How to Make Keto Pizza Sauce

Like I said, this is the easiest homemade pizza sauce to prepare.

Start by chopping garlic and getting the rest of the ingredients together.

Then heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, then add in the garlic. At this point, you’ll need to pay attention and move fast because garlic cooks quickly.

When the garlic starts to become fragrant and looks like it’s beginning to brown, then pour in the tomato sauce. Turn the heat down to low and give the sauce a few stirs until the garlic and sauce are combined.

    Then stir in the oregano.

Cook the sauce for 15 – 20 minutes or until it develops into a dark red color.

Cooking the sauce for at least 15 minutes will help cook out the canned tomato taste and create a rich flavor.

This recipe creates about 3 cups of sauce. An individual serving size is two tablespoons.

I use about ½ cup of sauce for 8-inch cauliflower pizza crusts. However, I use about 1 – 1 /2 cups of pizza sauce when making a sheet pan pizza.

Leftover sauce can be store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen.

Use on your favorite pizza recipes.

Other low carb pizza sauce recipes

Here are some other keto pizza sauce options that don’t include tomato sauce.

Alfredo sauce – this is delicious with spinach, cheese, and chicken.

Pesto – try this with cheese and shrimp. Yum!

Garlic and olive oil – this is a classic base that works great with all kinds of low carb toppings.

What can you make with sugar-free pizza sauce?

You can use this pizza sauce on just about anything.

Use as a dipping sauce for low carb mozzarella sticks, crispy baked eggplant, or baked zucchini sticks.

If you’re not counting carbs, then spread pizza sauce on an English muffin, bagel thin, or pita for a quick low-calorie snack.

Use this pizza sauce when making low carb pizza meatloaf, baked chicken pizza, or low carb pizza dip.

    Supplies

    • 5 1/2 – 6 quart saute pan – I have this Cuisinart saute pan with a helper handle.
    • Pizza pan – I have this Wilton recipe right pizza pan. It works great for low-carb pizza crusts.
    • Mason jars – I use 16-ounce mason jars to store pizza in. Don’t forget the plastic lids.
    • Souper Cubes – This is my new favorite tool to freeze all kinds of sauces. The 1-cup tray is perfect for freezing portions of pizza sauce.
