When I purchased my slow cooker a couple of month ago I did so with mixed feelings. Even my husband, the biggest Skinny Mom’s Kitchen cheerleader, was skeptical about acquiring this new small appliance. You see years ago I ditched all my slow cookers because even though I followed recipes exactly I still burned and overcooked everything. I wasted more time, food, and money than I care to admit.
Even with my failed efforts I decided to give slow cooking another chance. Mostly because I knew, if used correctly, it can be an effective tool in helping busy moms prepare and cook healthy meals for their families.
Taking the time to explore and learn the correct way to prepare nutritious meals using a slow cooker has made a huge difference in achieving successful outcomes. Most slow cooker cookbooks (even the popular ones) give the impression that you can just dump a bunch of ingredients into a slow cooker turn it on in the morning and by dinnertime have a delicious succulent meal. They are wrong. More often than not, depending on the recipe, you get a flavorless, mushy, and/or burnt mess.
The cookbook which provided me with the most useful and practical slow cooking advice, information, and recipes has been the Slow Cooker Revolution by American’s Test Kitchen.
This cookbook completely changed the way I use my slow cooker.
For example, their tutorial “all about chicken in the slow cooker” states that chicken should never be cooked longer than 6 hours and only on low. Cooking longer or on high can and most likely will result in overcooked rubbery meat. They also offer tutorials on blooming onions, garlic, and spices in the microwave beforehand to enhance the flavors and protect them from fading during the slow cooking process. Who knew?
I never came across any of this information before in the other slow cooker cookbooks I have read. It has been incredibly helpful.
The slow cooker information found between the pages of the Slow Cooker Revolution Cookbook, in my opinion, is reason enough to purchase it.
However, if you are looking for more reasons then let me talk about the recipes.
This cookbook offers a total of 200 classic and modern slow cooker recipes. Each one featuring specific instructions making sure successful results are achieved every time. With my fear of ruining another dish this was a feature I appreciated.

Each recipe turned out perfect and exactly as described in the recipe. They were easy to prepare using simple ingredients and also very adaptable to suit the needs and tastes of my family.
Make Ahead Meal and Freezer Cooking Adaptability
When purchasing and reviewing cookbooks, besides delicious recipes, I look for whether recipes can be adapted for make ahead meals and freezer cooking. Because honestly if I cannot in some way make the meals or part of the meal ahead of time then most likely I will not make it at all.
Each of the recipes I prepared all produced larger quantities than my family can eat in one sitting. This gave me the opportunity to create freezer meals for future lunches or dinners. All of the recipes froze and reheated perfectly. The only recipe that I did not try to freeze was the steel cut oats because typically oatmeal (unless baked) does not freeze well. I provide freezing and reheating instructions to all of the recipes I tried.
Additionally, the Slow Cooker Revolution Cookbook has a section focused on recipes that can be made ahead of time to be used for future meals. They even give recipes for meals to use the starters in. For example, the recipe for shredded chicken filling can be use for quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, lasagana, tostadas, and other meals. You can find many other recipes like this one in the cookbook.
This is a fantastic cookbook not only for slow cooking but also for additional make ahead meals and freezer cooking recipes.
If you like the idea of slow cooking but have been frustrated with the final results of past slow cooking recipes you have tried then this is the cookbook for you. As the title states, it will truly revolutionize the way you use your slow cooker. It did for me.
