Google has become one of the biggest and most well-known companies in the world, so of course they have a fitness app. Google Fit is a free download, and can be used on any mobile device. It can pretty much track any activity you can think of. The app gives you stats, including speed, pace, route, and elevation. It claims to have a goal setting feature that allows you to set different fitness goals and get personalized recommendations and coaching. Finally, Google Fit can be synched to other apps like My Fitness Pal and Nike+.

Once you have the app downloaded, you will see that it is pretty simple to navigate. There are only a few tabs, which makes it nice and easy.

The Home tab is where you will spend most of your time. From here, you can add a goal. There are some pre-made goals already in the app, such as take 10,000 steps, be active for 30 minutes, or run 3 times every week. These are all basic fitness goals we should all try to reach. So if you’re just starting out on your fitness or weight loss journey, then one of these goals may be the place to start. If you’re more advanced or have a more specific fitness goal in mind, you can easily create your own. This can be a goal relating to cardio, strength-training, flexibility, balance, whatever you want to work on. I love the goal-setting feature because it is realistic to work on one aspect of your fitness at a time, rather than try to tackle everything all at once.

From the Home tab, you can also log your weight. You can do this as often as you would like, whether it be daily or weekly. It’s a nice way to keep track of any gains or losses. If you start to notice that your weight hasn’t budged, you may have hit a weight loss plateau. If this is the case, you will need to change up your routine somehow to bust out of that plateau. See this post for some ideas.

The Home tab is where you will also add your activities. The app literally has every possible activity in the databank, including basketball, boxing, and gardening. Just scroll down the list and find it. You can manually add how long you did this activity for, or use the tracker. To use the tracker, you simply tap “start activity.” While you are exercising, the app will keep track of your time, calories burned, distance, steps taken, and speed. You can pause the tracker any time you need to, and resume your workout when you are ready.

On the Home tab you can also get workout tips, nutrition tracking and more from connected apps just by clicking on them. This could include My Fitness Pal, Nike+, and many others.

The other tab you will probably use the most is the Timeline tab. This will show your recent workouts, calories burned, and your weight. You will be able to see this in day view or week view. This is another great feature to keep track of how well you are doing and how much you are sticking to your goals and workout plan.

The other two tabs are just Settings and Help. So that’s it, super simple and helpful app. The tracker was accurate during my test, and it only gave me information I cared about. No frilly extras. If you don’t care about heart rate and other things like that, then the Google Fit app might be the right “fit” for you!
