When I finally decided to take control of my health, I wanted to choose a program that would be compatible with my lifestyle and sustainable in the long-term.
Back in 2014, I was a serial dieter. I’d tried cabbage soup diets, drank weight loss shakes, eaten Medifast and other prepackaged meal programs, you name it! There was very little I had not tried. And while I lost weight on each of those, the moment I stopped eating their food or from their restrictive diet plan, my weight always crept back up because I hadn’t learned how to eat the foods I love, the foods that are regularly available and most of all, I had no sense of moderation or balance.
So I went back to the only weight loss program that I knew would allow me to eat REAL food: Weight Watchers.
And I’ve stuck with it, over the past 2+ years and -115lbs of weight loss because Weight Watchers has a number of advantages just not available in other weight loss programs.
#1. Weight Watchers is about REAL FOOD.
I often travel for work, I eat out in restaurants 3-4 times each week and as long as I work the program, Weight Watchers allows me to eat real food anywhere I can find it. I have never felt like I couldn’t have a food item I love, or that I couldn’t go to a restaurant or a party, because nothing is “off limits.”
#2. Weight Watchers taught me MODERATION and MINDFUL EATING.
I can still have French fries, apple pie, steak and my beloved Cosmopolitans, I just have to have one portion, no matter what size portion is served to me. I’ve also learned to eat mindfully – gone are the days of snacking out of a bowl of chips or a box of Wheat Thins. Now I weigh or count my portions and only serve myself the portion I’m eating. Side Note: This is a GREAT trick for not overeating out of that bowl of chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant!
#3. Weight Watchers helped me give up “diet food.”
I have learned that I would MUCH rather have a sensible portion of full-fat cheese than suffer through fat-free, plastic cheese. I enjoy my cheese treats so much more because they’re real and delicious. Same thing goes for pasta with Sunday sauce – I’d rather have a half portion of the real thing than some pre-packaged, frozen meal whose sauce is NOT Sunday sauce.
#4. Weight Watchers has helped me find BALANCE in my eating.
With Weight Watchers, you can have any food you want, you just can’t have them ALL on the same day. Knowing I can fit a Happy Hour with the girls into the same week as a big family dinner and a work lunch makes feel like I’m fitting Weight Watchers into my life, not that I’m trying to fit my life into a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all weight loss program.
#5. Tracking my food intake has made me much more conscious of the types of foods that satiate, or help me feel “full.”
By understanding that my meals of lean protein and fresh veggies help keep me fuller longer than meals high in carbs or sugar, I have learned to look for those food items more often in my meals.
#6. Weight Watchers has helped me learn to eat to fuel my body, instead of eating out of boredom or to push down and mask anxiety, stress and depression.
I look for foods that are going to be great fuel for my busy life, and I’ve learned to recognize when I’m not hungry but looking to eat as an emotional response to a situation. It’s the first time in my life I’ve recognized food’s purpose is not to entertain or soothe me, but to help my body operate as efficiently as possible.
#7. Weight Watchers has been life-changing for my emotional wellness.
Without food to soothe or entertain or distract me, I’ve had to get real about how I handle stress and anxiety. I’ve learned to run or dance off a bad mood, to journal through tough situations and truly examine how I can change the circumstances that cause me stress or sadness so I can live the happiest, healthiest life yet!
#8. Weight Watchers makes me want to move my booty!
By having a weekly activity target of FitPoints to earn, I am always pushing myself to meet and exceed that goal by walking more, taking the stairs and trying new exercise like Zumba, pilates, yoga, bootcamp and even spin classes!
#9. I’ve learned to savor the good stuff!
I feel like I’ve learned to treat my treats like treats! Not every meal needs a starch, not every day needs dessert. And by limiting these high-sugar or starchy items to occasional treats and not every day occasions, I’ve been able to lose more weight and learn to truly ENJOY, not just expect, these yummy things in my menus!
#10. The millions of fellow Weight Watchers provide me support, inspiration and a sense of community that lets me know I’m not alone!
Whether it’s the WW Connect feature on the app, which is only available to WW members, or free online Facebook groups or Instagram hashtags like #WWFam, #WWFamily, #WWSisterhood or #WWBros – there is something for everyone and I’m always amazed by how many people have been where I’m at!
