When I started losing weight, I didn’t realize how much I would be changing. Or that I would become addicted to trying new, positive habits in order to figure out which worked best for me. I needed to know which worked for me and why. I’m fueled by the reasoning, the science, the experiences. I also love to share, so I’m going to share my one habit that has helped me get off the most weight.

My habit of learning something new or different every day has propelled my weight loss into a completely different universe. The best part? You can learn as much or as little as you want each day. It could be a twenty second read of a motivational quote or it could be hours listening to a podcast because you’re driving on a long road trip.

Learning is absolutely critical to success. I would like to help make it as easy as possible for you. Below are some questions you can answer to start developing the learning habit for your weight loss journey.

What Do You Want to Learn?

Write out a list of what you’d like to learn. If you’re diving into healthier habits, you may want to know about calories, recipes, exercise, intermittent fasting, cardio vs strength training, hormones, etc.

Now, take a look at your list and pick a topic that jumps out at you. Take two minutes to write out all the questions you have on this topic.

Onto the journey of answering your questions.

Where Can You Learn About Your Topic?

A few suggestions:

  • Youtube
  • Articles
  • Blogs
  • Podcasts (I use PlayerFM and love it)
  • Books – Your local library may be a great resource.
  • Talking to others – sharing your desire to learn about a specific topic with others may lead to finding great resources that you may have missed out on.

How Do You Find Time to Learn?

I find time throughout my day to learn. You might need to sit down and find dedicated time. It’s an individual experience. If you don’t have enough time, you may want to start learning about time management.

Let’s dig into when and how you’ll learn:

  • Are you more alert in the morning, afternoon or evening?
  • How are you taking in your information?
    • I ask this because if you’re going to be on Youtube right before bed, the blue light will impact your sleep cycles and I would recommend your learning to be done at a different time of day.
  • Do you like to sit down and read or do you prefer timed bursts?
  • How do you get to and from work?
    • If you take public transit or are a passenger in a car pool, you can: read, listen to podcasts or audiobooks and watch videos.
    • If you drive, you can listen to podcasts or audiobooks.
  • What type of learner are you?
    • Depending on your type, you’ll take in information using different methods.

How Can You Make Learning Easier?

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor talks about the 20 Second Rule. What I learned is the human brain is a fascinating organ and is also quite lazy. The reality is that the brain will gravitate to the easiest thing. It will encourage you to reach for that bag of chips that’s on the coffee table instead of getting up and grabbing an apple.

The 20 Second Rule is essentially this: “Lower the activation energy for the habits you want to adopt, and raise it for the habits you want to avoid.” (Credit: The Happiness Advantage) In the weight loss journey, you’re likely ready to get all the junk food out of the house so you don’t eat it. That’s raising the activation energy. Getting up, putting on clothes, and going to the store in order to replace those foods. That’s a lot of work.

Conversely, the healthier option, the apple, is now right there on the counter.

Which are you going to choose?

Using the 20 Second Rule to change your learning habits is a cinch. Here are some of my tips:

  • Put the book you’re reading on the coffee table and put the TV remote controls in another room.
  • Subscribe to a few newsletters that encourage positive habits.
  • Have your podcast app saved on your home screen for easy access.
  • Save your learning tabs so they open automatically when you open the internet.
  • Set alerts or calendar reminders for learning time.

Make Learning Part of Who You Are

I truly believe that we all like to learn. I find it troubling that, as a society, we don’t put an emphasis on using our learning muscle enough. It is beneficial to all of us that we learn and grow.
