5 Ways a Nutrition Consultant Can Get You Back on Track

There is no criticism, just positive energy and personalized strategies to help you meet your goals. Do you feel overwhelmed? Well, that’s what I’m here for! The clients that come to me for nutrition and/or weight loss help are from a variety of backgrounds, have different goals, and have different tastes. That’s why one cookie-cutter “diet” is not going to work for everybody. In my world, there is no “diet.” There is a healthy lifestyle, which happens to include chocolate (or pizza, or wine, or whatever your vices are). The one thing they all have in common is that they need to make a change. For some of them, it’s small, for others it’s big. Here are five of the problems my clients come to me with, and a little bit of how we work through them.

#1 – I’m pre-menopausal and cannot lose weight!

The last four women I have worked with were all in their late 40’s and they all had the same complaint. What they used to do to lose weight just wasn’t working anymore. These women were frustrated, to say the least. The first thing I recommended for them is to see their doctor to get their hormone levels checked. The dirty truth is that as we get closer to menopause, our bodies tend to gain weight easier (especially around the middle), and it becomes much harder to lose weight. This is due to the fluctuating hormones during this life change. A doctor can help you with treatment to get those hormones under control. I also had each of them keep a food journal for three days for me to inspect. From there, we looked at calories, protein, carbs, and fat intake, as well as discussing how active they were. Then we made a plan. Three of them were solid with their workouts and just needed a menu plan. The other needed both. So that’s what they got!

#2 – I am too busy and just need someone to tell me what to eat.

This is the client who runs her own business and has a family to take care of. She has some time to meal prep on the weekends, but not much time during the weekdays to think about and prepare food. For her, we again analyzed a food journal and looked at the numbers. Then I made her a meal plan that included a meal prep plan. This woman needs everything ready to go. All she asked is that I don’t make her ditch her beloved coffee fix in the mornings. So far, she hasn’t had to.

#3 – I want my stomach to be flat again.

I have heard this from every woman I have worked with who has had children and is over 30. Ladies, I cannot change what childbirth has done to your body, but we can work with it to make some improvements. When a client tells me this, I usually prescribe a menu plan that includes belly-flattening foods, lots of water, and a fitness plan that includes a super intense plank challenge. I won’t sugar coat it – If you truly want to see your abs again, you have to put in some serious work.

#4 – I want to have more energy.

Don’t we all? If you are a busy working adult, then you probably have times in your day where your energy is just nonexistent. When a client tells me this, I immediately want to see their food journal. If they are turning to refined carbs and sugar for pick-me-ups, we talk about healthier snacks that will provide more energy. A nice balance of healthy carbs, fat, and protein is what I suggest, and I give lots of examples. I also inquire about exercise and sleep habits because both of these things affect energy levels as well. Finally, we talk about what the client does to take some time for herself each day. This is so important so you don’t burn out on life.

#5 – I need more healthy breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack ideas.

This type of client is usually pretty savvy on what a healthy diet looks like, but they are bored with the same old oatmeal for breakfast, salad for lunch, and chicken for dinner. My job is to provide them with a whole new list of healthy breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks that can be put into a menu plan rotation. Changing up what you eat will give you more satisfaction in your diet, and keep you feeling excited about eating healthy.
