Over the last couple months I’ve been searching for, and experimenting with, wholesome smoothie recipes my kids will enjoy. It’s no secret that I love green smoothies. Truthfully, I don’t think I would eat nearly the amount of fruits and vegetables I do without smoothies – I’m just not a “side of kale” kind of girl. However, I’ll blend all kinds of fruits, vegetables, and greens into a smoothie and love every last sip of it.

My girls on the other hand won’t come near the blender if they think I snuck a handful of spinach in there. So, I leave it out and opt for fruit-only smoothies. At 6:30am I’m not willing to fight the “eat your veggies” battle.

In the morning I mostly concerned with my girls eating good carbs and protein. We leave early in the morning for school and they don’t eat lunch until noon so there’s about 5 hours between breakfast and lunch. One way I thought about adding more protein to smoothies was with yogurt. However, dairy gives them upset tummies in the morning so I couldn’t do that.

It didn’t occur to me to use an yogurt alternative so I was excited when Silk contacted me to create a recipe for Silk Almond Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative. I knew right away that I would use it in a smoothie recipe for my kiddos!

Actually, I decided to put together a smoothie bowl recipe. It makes my kids happy when they feel like they’re eating ice cream for breakfast. It makes me feel good too because this banana split smoothie bowl is quite a breakfast treat that’s secretly good for you! #momwin

I used Silk Almond Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative in strawberry flavor. The texture is creamy and the flavor is outstanding. I use many Silk products so I expected it to taste good but I was surprise by how much I enjoyed this. 

There’s also vanilla flavor and plain.

In a blender I added 2 cups of frozen strawberries, 1 (5.3 ounce) container of Silk Almond Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative strawberry flavor, 1/2 of a banana, and 1 cup unsweetened almond milk. If  you need additional sweetness then add in a couple teaspoons of pure maple syrup or a couple pitted dates.

Of course, this can also be made into a smoothie. Blend in more liquid until you get the consistency you like. I wanted to make a smoothie bowl so 1-cup was all I needed to get the thick creamy consistency I like.

Then I topped the bowl with sliced banana, a couple teaspoons of mini chocolate chips, and sprinkle of walnuts. Basically, use the toppings you’d enjoy on a banana split – healthier versions of course.

This banana split smoothie bowl is delicious. Creamy and filled with great flavors. The Silk Almond Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative gave the smoothie bowl enough bulk to keep my girls full and satisfied throughout the morning. Actually, it was hard for them to finish it because it was so filling.

I like to drink smoothies but I did enjoy using a spoon with this smoothie bowl and the extra toppings it comes with. I think this would be a great option for those who are trying to break away from late night sweets. Try enjoying a small smoothie bowl instead. Ingredients
  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 (5.3 ounce) Silk Almond Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative Strawberry Flavor
  • 1 medium banana, divided
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 teaspoons mini milk chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons chopped walnuts
Instructions
  1. In a blender combine the strawberries, Silk Almond Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative Strawberry Flavor, ½ of the banana, and almond milk. Blend until smooth.
  2. Scoop into 2 bowls and top with sliced banana, mini chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts.
  3. Serve immediately.
