Healthy Breakfast Options From The Freezer Aisle

We all know the saying, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” because it is true! Eating in the morning helps ignite your metabolism for the day. In case you didn’t know, your metabolism is what keeps you burning calories throughout the day. If you don’t eat breakfast, your metabolism stalls and goes into starvation mode, preserving calories until your next meal. This is not how you want to start your day. Eating breakfast also sends you into your day feeling alert, clear-headed and energized.

Many people claim they don’t eat breakfast because they just don’t have the time. But breakfast doesn’t have to be an elaborate cooking session. It can be quick and easy without having to hit the coffee shop drive-thru. Tammy has lots of ideas for ways to be ready with quick, healthy breakfasts, from overnight oats to freezing breakfast burritos. These are all great options that you should check out. But if you absolutely must turn to a freezer meal for breakfast, there are some good options out there. As always with buying processed food, it will never be as healthy as anything you make homemade. You need to be careful to read labels thoroughly. If you are turning to store-bought freezer options for breakfasts, check out these four.

#1 – Jimmy Dean Delights

The option we chose here is the Honey Wheat English Muffin with Canadian Bacon, Egg White, and Cheese. This frozen option is made with whole grains, and is high in protein, calcium, and iron. For one sandwich, you are going to consume 210 calories and 4.5 grams of fat. You will get 1 gram of fiber and 14 grams of protein, which will help you stay full. I recommend adding some fruit to this meal to round it out and give your body something fresh. You don’t want to eat these too often though, because they can be high in sodium and have added sugar. Sodium is hard to avoid in processed foods because it helps preserve them.

#2 – Weight Watchers Smart Ones

We chose an option similar to the Jimmy Dean sandwich. It’s the Canadian Style Bacon English Muffin Sandwich. Again, you are going to get a breakfast high in protein, calcium, and iron, and the muffin is made with whole grain. With this sandwich, you are getting 230 calories and 8 grams of fat. There are 2 grams fiber and 14 grams of protein. As with the Jimmy Dean sandwich, you need to watch how often you eat these due to the sodium and added sugar.

#3 – Special K Flatbread Breakfast Sandwich

This sandwich stands out from the first two for a couple of reasons. It has more fiber because the whole grains come first on the ingredients list. This sandwich is made with whole wheat flour, rye, triticale, millet, brown rice flour, and barley flakes. That’s a lot of whole grains! You are still going to get the same 14 grams of protein here, as well as a healthy dose of calcium. This sandwich comes in at 240 calories and 11 grams of fat. Again, higher sodium and added sugar appear on the nutrition label, so eat infrequently.

#4 – Amy’s Tofu Scramble

I love Amy’s products simply for the short list of ingredients. Compared to the first three options, this scramble has the fewest ingredients, just organic tofu, veggies, oil, salt and spices. You will get 4 grams of fiber and 19 grams of protein, the highest amounts out of all the choices. This meal comes in at 320 calories and 19 grams of fat. That is definitely a little higher in fat than the other choices, and there is still a higher amount of sodium than we would like to consume on a regular basis.

These freezer breakfast options are not the healthiest choices for breakfast, but in our hectic fast-paced world, they are the healthier options out there in the freezer section. Keep one on hand to have for that morning when you just have zero time to put anything else together, or your pre-made freezer stash is all used up. It will be better than hitting a fast food drive-thru for a giant sized bagel or greasy breakfast sandwich.
